<Memory is Soft Drinks> a solo by Lai Chun Ling, Dick

Emerging artist Lai Chun Ling, Dick, who received his BA in Fine Art from RMIT University (a joint program with Hong Kong Art School) in 2010, is an energetic and sincere artist. He always uses his body as the medium in the artworks to draw the common experience of himself or all the other people.

Having been given the first attention at his graduation exhibition this year, Lai never stops preparing and takes part in different kinds of exhibitions, such as ‘New Trend 2011’ Fresh Art Graduates Exhibition, ‘Peeping Moon’ performing art show and ‘Everyone can take photograph’ photo exhibition. This coming exhibition is Lai’s the first solo exhibition, as well as, the first artist solo exhibition presented by Front /SiDE Gallery.

In <Memory is Soft Drinks>, the artist chooses 39 empty bottles of beverages he had drunk during his work and re-makes them. Each of the empty bottles implies as the biological process that the drinks being digested and transformed in the artist’s body. The artist re-considers the very common behavior, drinking beverages, as his private memory review.

Memories is soft drinks

The work of each day toils the corporeal body which is turning 40. The unconscious intake of beverages of each day can ease body exhaustion. By reexamining the accustomed behavior, one discovers, the body, after every digestion of beverages and empties bottles after bottles,  functions to record the slipping away of beverages.

On the verge of my 40th year of existence, I decided to have a drastic career change. In the coming summer, the process of ingestion could be more than mere subsistence of the drudged body, but a witness to the striving of artistic living amidst disturbed restlessness.

The empty plastic bottles and beer bottles in my hands reminded me of the memories, held by the corporeal body, for the past 39 years. Someone once said, “Time is sand and memory is water”. In that sense, all memories flowed through my body indeed.

39 bottles, then, are not 39 stories, but remembrance of 40 years.

藝術家作品概念artist statement from Lai Chun Ling, Dick:

When nowadays everyone can take photographs, under the platform of the Internet, images have become digitised, everyone at every moment can upload images to a digitised world, loads of data may be replaced by another loads of data. The original physical body printed on these photo papers seemed to be departing from the image captured, like the soul is leaving the body, an of out-of-body stage. Are we still holding a photograph?
